Our first Upcycle Exchange went so great, we just couldn’t wait to do it again! This time we’ll collect supplies for vendors at Artropy, a unique art and craft show experience hosted by ShowMeEtsy, The STL Etsy Street Team. They define Artropy as “A measure of the randomness of production, according to handmade principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.” To sum it up, you’ll find lots of really cool stuff there, including upcycled goods galore. Snag discounts and freebies while you’re there! Check out our wish list!

It may come as no surprise that one of our participating artists is a member of Etsy’s Trashion Street Team, a group of Etsy sellers who focus on recycling and upcycling all kinds of discarded and found materials. Emily of Candy Calamity recently interviewed us for their blog. Check it out! In related news, we’ll be posting a new wish-list on Monday for ShowMeEtsy’s upcoming show, Artropy.

Sublime Stitching Upcycling Contest

By Autumn | Published: April 6, 2009

upcycle-logoAre you a crafter? Then you’ve probably heard of Sublime Stitching. Jenny Hart designs some of the hippest, cutest embroidery patterns you could ever hope to get your paws on. Embroidery is a versatile and easy way to spiff up boring clothing, and personalize everything from pillows to window screens, and that’s why it shouldn’t be too hard for you to come up with a creative way to incorporate it in your next upcycling project.

With that in mind, Sublime Stitching has announced an upcycling contest, and guess who’s judging it? None other than Upcycling Exchange founder, Autumn Wiggins. So, show us your stuff, and win some awesome prizes!

spacer25

How to Enter:

  • Create something made of items that would have otherwise been thrown away or recycled (stained shirt, chipped glass). While we admit to being partial to embroidery, we will accept entries of any kind!
  • Submit a photo of your entry by April 27, 2009 to the Sublime Stitching Customer Gallery. When you create the name for your project be sure to begin with the word “Upcycled”. (For example “Upcycled Book Mark”) This is important because otherwise we may not see your submission. That would be a bummer.

Prizes:

  • First Prize:  $50 gift certificate to Sublime Stitching, $50 gift certificate to Fred Flare, and a copy of Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things.
  • Second Prize:  Sublime Stitching Craft Pad and Sublime Stitching Lotus Flower Journal, and a copy of Amy Butler’s Midwest Modern.
  • Third prize:  Sublime Stitching Lotus Flower Journal and Issue 8 of Mixtape Zine.

Get crackin’ crafties!

Highlights from Green With Indie

By Autumn | Published: March 26, 2009

upxchangeboothWe weren’t sure what to expect since no one has ever really tried this before, but our very first Upcycle Exchange was an amazing success! Thanks to the STL Craft Mafia for hosting us, and of course, all of you that collected and brought in items on our wish-list! Every single artist that participated went home with a treasure trove of the specific items they asked for. Heavily requested supplies like fabric, paper, sewing notions and trims were donated in such abundance that we even gave non-participating vendors the opportunity to acquire goodies which were sorted and arranged for them to choose from at the end of the show.

treasure

Here you see Autumn doing her best E.T. imitation amidst a mountain of donations. Now mind you this was merely 3 hours into the show on Saturday! That quantity more than tripled by closing time on Sunday. Once we got into the groove of sorting(and confiscated some more bins to do so), it was a lot of fun to run the booth! The best part was hearing the stories of the items we were collecting. Many people expressed the original intentions they had for their belongings, and why they had hesitated before to dispose of them, or give them up to the anonymous abyss of a thrift store. To many of them, there was comfort in knowing for sure that the materials would be put to good use, and help local artists make a living. Others found a thrill in collecting and hunting for items on the list. So if nothing else, we concluded it’s just plain fun to keep junk out of landfills! In the end, all that was left over was about a lunch bag full of fabric and paper scraps.

Our make-and-take project, a cute plant pot made from soup cans and leftover yarn, was a big hit with everyone too!

What’s next? Get ready, because we’re going to be at just about every indie craft show in St. Louis this summer! Our next exchange will be at Artropy, an event produced by Show-Me-Etsy, on April 25th. Stay tuned for the new wish-list! (We’ll keep the expired one up for now, just as an example)

Go for Launch!

By Autumn | Published: March 15, 2009

Welcome to The Upcycle Exchange, a pilot program for indie craft events. What’s the big idea? Well, a lot small craft businesses make useful, stylish stuff from things you might toss in the trash, or that otherwise clutter your home. Though we adore the hours we spend picking over thrift stores and garage sales, it’s an inefficient and time consuming way to gather materials. The truth is that we’d like spend a lot more time making merchandise, and be able to do so with a consistent stream of supplies.

If you love to buy handmade, and love the planet, and like to save money…then you’ll love this!
