Printable Store Flyer + Printer Ink Tip!

AutumnMay 26th, 2011Blog, Materials MarketNo Comments

A lot of you have requested printable flyers, and Upcycle delivers! You’ll find that below. I designed it 8 to a page, to save paper. If you don’t have time to cut them out, just tell people you give the whole sheet to that they can pass it along to 7 other friends, if they are so inclined ;)

Also, I’m always raving about continuous ink systems to my friends. So I may as well tell you about them too, while we’re on the subject of printing. It’s a lot more earth-freindly to reuse cartridges over and over in your own home than recycling them. It’s also A LOT cheaper. I got mine at CISinks.com, but there may be other places that have them. CISinks makes kits for most models of inkjets. It’s not all messy like those kits with the syringes for normal cartridges either. Mmmk, I know ths has very little to do with upcycling….carry on!

Bicycle! Bicycle!

AutumnMay 12th, 2011BlogNo Comments

The Dutchtown Classic Bike Race is happening this Sunday, and Upcycle Exchange is smack in the middle of it! So first off, the store is still going to be open 11-4pm, but parking may be a little iffy(the yellow roads, and Meramec will be closed, as I understand it). We just moved into the neighborhood during the tail end of the race planning, and I sort of have no idea what’s going on, but thought maybe our customers, should know about it. That is all.

Duchess of Dutchtown

AutumnMay 9th, 2011Blog, Materials MarketNo Comments

This sweet little thing was found near a trash can on Meramec in front of the shop on Saturday! She was starving and rather stinky, but hung in there with us in the store until Elizabeth Frick of Tenth Life Cats came and whisked her away for some special care and a much needed bath. We are so lucky to have an organization like Tenth Life in St. Louis, who provides loving personal attention and necessary medical treatments to special needs cats and kittens in the city. It’s good to hear that Duchess(yeah, we got to give her her shelter name!), is doing well and about ready for foster care until she can be placed in a forever-home! If you are interested in adopting one of the many Tenth Life Cats available now, or would like to donate money and/or volunteer, go check out their website: http://www.tenthlifecats.org/

The Upcycle Exchange is donating 10% of all proceeds this month to Tenth Life too!

Spiffy Store Brochure

AutumnMay 6th, 2011Blog, Materials MarketNo Comments

I handed a bunch of these brochures out at Indie Craft Revolution last weekend(which was awesome, by the way – thanks to everyone that dropped off!). It gives a good overview of how the store works, and our membership options for artists. You can download both pages, print it up 2-sided, and it folds all pretty-like. Just thought I’d throw them up here :)

I would have added the the Wish-list to it, but that would have been a little crowded! Do you want to go to there?

A Virtual Tour of The {Materials Market}

AutumnApril 26th, 2011Blog, Materials Market2 Comments

The Upcycle Exchange {Materials Market} quietly opened it’s doors on Earth Day, of all days! So, maybe you are wondering how the store works, what we have in stock, and all that jazz.

First, when you walk in to the space, you’ll see the wall of fabric and yarn, but also, lots and lots of lovely cabinets, and boxes. Upcycle isn’t set up like a normal store. We don’t put it all out in your face. Items are superbly organized, but you’ll have to open up those cabinets, pull out those boxes, and do a little treasure hunting. Everything is labeled, and not in overwhelming quantities.

You will also notice that the space is huge. The store is part of a multi-use building called The Collective, which is a business incubator. There are other companies that use it as an office and meeting space. At the moment, we are really concentrating on collecting and stocking materials, and won’t be offering any classes for now.

Prices are pay-as-you-wish, but we find customers appreciate having a reference point. So, we suggest $3/ounce for vintage jewelry/beads, and $20/cart for everything else. The carts are about 15″ on each side and 10″ deep. You can fit quite a bit in them. Again, it’s totally up to you what you pay, but keep in mind that we have to charge sales tax of 8.4% on each purchase. 10% of your purchase price goes toward a different charity each month. For April/May we are supporting a great organization called Tenth Life Cats. Ultimately, the store has many items that the suggested price is an absolute steal for, and other items, like common disposables, where paying that much would be silly. It’s up to you to gauge what it’s worth to you, and what you can afford. We won’t bat an eye at any amount.

The store does have a policy of one purchase/per person/per day of only what you can carry out the door in one trip (bulk sized items are allowed in addition to this).

Please remember to bring your own reusable bags to take home your purchases! You have like a million of them by now, right? We do usually have some paper grocery bags and empty boxes,  just in case you forget!

There are certain abundant and popular supplies that you can count on us having in stock. Fabric, of course, and yarn, though the fiber content of those items aren’t always labeled. We can usually help you figure that out. There are two large desks and some counter space that you can use to sort through any boxes or jars of supplies you want to check out. One has a measuring tape for fabric.

The layout of the store, counterclockwise from the entrance is:

  • Vintage/Broken Jewelry and Beads – on the two window shelf units, displayed on platters and in jars
  • Fabric, Yarn, and Other Needle/Fiber Arts – displayed on in the large wall unit. Smaller pieces and scraps will be organized by color in boxes. All sewing notions (we have a whole range), embroidery threads, knitting accessories, and other such things are organized in the cabinets beneath the display shelves. One cabinet houses interior design samples as well.
  • General Craft Supplies – organized in boxes in the first glass cabinet. May vary, but usually contains a range of craft glues, glitter, sequins, feathers, pipe cleaners, craft kits for kids, artificial flowers, wood components, and natural components like pine cones and buckeyes. We also have a lot of melt and pour soap and soap making supplies at the moment!
  • Common Disposables – in the white double cabinet. We will always have tons of wine corks and bottlecaps, as well as styrofoam pieces, misc. plastic, coffee bags, paper tubes, shipping supplies, and select china and glassware for mosaics and whatnot
  • Fine Art Supplies – in the white corner cabinet. You’ll find bins of acrylic, oil, watercolor, and other paints, mediums, brushes, palettes, canvases, frames, drawing tools and paper, and some *special* finds on the top shelf!
  • Paper Tools and Misc. – in the second glass cabinet. We have stamps, scissors, and other scrapboking tools, rolled sticker films, wallpaper samples. Our “misc.” right now includes TONS of vinyl records, decorator vinyl and floor samples, metal lunchboxes, tins, license plates, and other metal components.
  • Paper and Ephemera – organized in boxes on the last shelving unit. We have a variety of vintage postcards, greeting card, maps, as well as plain and patterned paper for scrapbooking, playing cards, and other interesting epemera.

Well, that does it for the tour! When you check out, we use an iPad as our cash register and Square to accept Visa, Mastercard, or Discover. You can also pay through Paypal, or with cash, if you like.

We are always adding new inventory, and collect supplies at 5 area drop-off locations. Stop in early and often! Check out our store calendar for operating hours. If you are looking for something specific, feel free to call ahead at (314) 282-7042 or email us at UpXChange@gmail.com and you’ll here back from us lickity split. Hope to see you soon!

P.S. Any artists or crafters who operate local indie brands are encouraged to check out our Maker Membership options. Bringing together and promoting our local upcycling community is a top priority of ours!

Earth Day Festival Recycling Extravaganza

AutumnApril 11th, 2011Blog, Events1 Comment

Sup, kids!?!  The store is almost ready, but we’ve got a big collection event that we’re really looking forward to this weekend! Sunday, April 17th is The St. Louis Earth Day Festival, and they have invited us to participate in their Recycling Extravaganza from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the St. Louis Community College Forest Park campus parking lot, off Oakland Ave.

There are about a dozen organizations and companies participating, and we are all accepting different items. Upcycle Exchange will take anything on our Wish-list, of course! The set-up is basically a drive-thru-drop-off. You’ll want to make sure everything you are bringing is separated for the organization that it’s supposed to go to, with the heaviest items on the bottom. So, Upcycle will be one of the first tents you drive by, and Habitat for Humanity will be further down the line.

After your car is purged of spring cleaning debris, leave it at STLCC and catch a ride to the Festival via a free shuttle service, provided by the St. Louis Lambert International Airport biodiesel bus and Super Park compressed natural gas (CNG) bus. The shuttle service will be available between 10:30am and 6:30pm and will leave every 15 minutes on the hour.

We hope for great weather, and look forward to seeing you there!

Upcycle’s Metamorphosis

AutumnFebruary 11th, 2011Announcements, Blog, Project ExpansionNo Comments

Upcycle has meandered through various stages of operation since we began nearly 2 years ago. We started with literally nothing. I painted a sign for our first event on a scrap piece of laminate, made coupons from cereal boxes, and for about 8 months, sorted and distributed supplies to artists without even utilizing storage space. Since then, we have transitioned from event-centric collections to local business drop-off  points, experimented with integration into a thrift shop and an artist co-op spaces, but have found it works best to go at it alone in the inexpensive, albeit cheerless, catacombs of a Cherokee St. boutique. We had things pretty well organized, but I was getting a little restless that the program was still growing. There is enough fabric, paper,  bottlecaps, and just all kinds of wonderful supplies that our member artists were getting full-up on.

As I spent more and more of my time sorting, I contemplated what to do next. Should we apply to be a non-profit? I just didn’t good reason to add a level of bureaucracy to this beautifully efficient and inexpensive operation. I have always felt that it shouldn’t get really big; it should multiply, but at what point does the cell divide? I stumbled across an intriguing term in my research for creative new business models -”open-source franchise.”  I was bent on sharing our operating procedures from the beginning, but this is a program where, it appears, that one or a few people end up doing the work. The member artisans naturally concentrate on making merchandise and promoting their micro-brands. Not to dismiss that groups of artisans exist who would be delegate tasks successfully and maintain their Upcylce Exchange as a “club.” I just suspect this would be a rare scenario.  Ultimately, if those doing the work of organizing/promoting collections and sorting are few, they should have the opportunity to be modestly reimbursed. Thus, Upcycle naturally matures into a retail store.

I am approaching this endeavor delicately:

  1. The member artisan system should remain intact. I still want to collect the specific supplies they are looking for and reserve a space for each artist’s unique requests; separated from general supply merchandise. The donor coupons and member merchandise discounts would continue.
  2. The initial pricing system will mimic up-and-coming social enterprises where customers are given a suggested price, but may pay what they feel the merchandise is worth to them or whatever they can afford. I hope this gives low-income patrons the opportunity to acquire supplies that they could otherwise not afford, and that those more fortunate will help to subsidize. There are also varying values of items across the spectrum of bulk and weight. If we sell “by-the-bag” I don’t think you should be obligated to pay as much for a bunch of coffee cans as you would  for a bag of vintage jewelry. Likewise, weight is not a good indicator as scrap metal, wood, etc. may be in dire condition, but heavy. As most of our inventory will be donated items, there will be no need for wholesale mark-up.
  3. I will place 10% of sales in a fund dedicated to acquiring mass-customization equipment for co-op craft workspaces in St. Louis. New and developing technology, such as 3D printers and laser cutters, will not only significantly expand the functionality,  aesthetic, and efficient fabrication of upcycled indie merchandise, but extend potential to even more obscure forms of post-consumer refuse.
  4. I am opting to join up with a complementary non-profit to split a space with. We’ll be able to get more space for our money, and benefit each other in many other ways. I’m very happy to be working with Perennial, a budding NPO that aims to open a community workshop and store that offers educational programming in creative reuse to diverse populations and sells creatively repurposed home furnishings and eco-friendly supplies for reuse projects.

We hope to open our location in late Spring or early Summer. Until then, Upcycle itself is in a bit of limbo. Peridot (the boutique we are housed in), switched locations last month, and packed up and moved with them. Knowing that we are moving again so soon has put a bit of a damper on getting everything out of the boxes and sorting out onto shelves like we had been doing at the previous location. We are still accepting donations, and artists are still able to come get supplies. We are just trying our best to spread things out and making it easy to “treasure hunt” rather than sorting extensively at this time.

I debated on whether to go ahead with Spring Open Enrollment, but have kept things at a throttle with current members. Due to high demand, and the fact that we do have a lot of great supplies for the taking(even if they are bit unorganized right now), I have decided to go ahead and accept new members for Spring, and will keep applications up until February 17th. The deal is that, for now, there is no membership fee, we just ask that members contribute a small sum to our Paypal account if they find a worthwhile amount of supplies when they visit. You will be given entrance to our collection as soon as you get your app in, but the new Wish-list will not be out till March 1st. I am doing my best to keep an eye out for unique requests and notify members  when I come across something they asked for!

Development continues on a new Upcycle site that will be capable facilitating the formation of new groups and automating/aggregating their Wish-lists, discounts and other essential digital elements of the program.  As a website developer with over a decade of experience, I can say that this is my most challenging project to date, but I’m enjoying the process and starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.  You will be notified the minute we go Alpha!

Finally, thank you so much for all your support. From donors to volunteers, and media outlets. Recently , we won 2nd place overall, and 1st in the Recycling category of Make: Magazine’s Green Project Contest with 840 votes!  Also, I was recognized as Upcycle’s founder in February’s ALIVE Magazine on the 2011 Buzz List for St. Louis. One thing’s for sure, this project is going places; most importantly, to a town near you soon, if you don’t live in St. Louis. ;)
