BridgetFainne

Since discovering that my great grandmother shares the exact same birth date as myself, separated by exactly 100 years, I have been inspired to explore my Celtic roots. My brand’s identity is Bridget Fainne; the name comes from my great grandmother, Bridget, and the term “fainne,” which loosely means “jewelry or bauble.” Piece of fainne were often worn by Irish folk to let other Irish folk know they had something in common. My practice lies in bringing together old and new, and nursing vintage, discarded (and in many a sense, homely) jewelry back to life in order to recycle these items into little pieces of Celtic heaven. Bridget Fainne’s slogan is “All things Irish and dandy!”

I upcycle because I see so much going to waste. I use primarily recycled materials in my crafts as a way to take an itty bitty bite out of what is going into landfills and as a way to help educate people on how items they might not need or want anymore can be useful to others. I remind people to donate their unwanted items to thrift stores to keep it in the use stream, rather than sending it directly to landfills.

It’s a great feeling to be able to transform a discarded item in to something not only usable, but beautitful, fun, functional or all of the above. I upcycle discarded clothing or reclaim cast-offs from thrift stores, friends and tag sales. I make pillows, aprons, totes and pet toys from the upcycled fabric I collect. It’s really rewarding to know that with a little creativity I can reduce waste and be a part of a community that cares.

Upcycling saves our planet! It also keeps us from buying supplies overseas and taking money away from our communities. Gwynie strives to keep a balance between new and old materials in her designs. Most pieces have at least one repurposed or upcycled object in them. Packaging is also a huge issue. Trying to find new (but old) mailers to package in can sometimes be a task. A variety of mediums can replace the typical mailer and thus, her packaging is different for every order. Using 100% recycled products does help but all donations of unused paper and magazines are even better!

Upcycling can help you declutter your house! So don’t be shy about what you put in, because one of us can surely use it. Don’t unload all your late great-grandmothers closets, but any broken item that has good materials still on it is appreciated all around.

Senora Muertos

I am a frugal artist who learned her craft from her hippy uncle. I learned to use what you have around you in your art and by doing so you can recycle and still make great art. Being a mother of two artistic children it is important to me to carry on this hopefully new family tradition. I try to look at every day objects and see how they can be reused. I use coffee creamer and dish soap bottles for some of my figures, wire hangers to make armatures, newspapers for the paper mache, cigar boxes and other such boxes to make dioramas, bottle caps are used to make my jewelry.

I hope by turning these items into art they will forever stay out of the landfills, thus making the world a little cleaner for me, my family and the world.

I try to use as many recycled supplies as I can. With a little patience and ingenuity I can make just about anything with less than 5% new materials, if any. Stick to Your Knittin Kitten

I upcycle just about anything I can wrap around a knitting needle or spin into yarn. I use plastic bags, garland, video tape, and fabric cut from clothes. I also have started unraveling sweaters to reclaim the yarn and turn it into something else. There is just so much unnecessary waste, and I know that I’ve been a wasteful consumer like so many other people. I now recycle everything I can, and what better way to recycle something than to turn it into something useful and lovely?
